CAREER GUIDE

Logistics and Transportation Jobs: Roles, Skills, and Career Paths

Logistics and transportation jobs help move goods, coordinate deliveries, manage inventory, and maintain the flow of materials through supply chains. Work can involve warehouses, distribution centers, transport fleets, shipping operations, purchasing, planning, or customer coordination.

Common Logistics and Transportation Roles

  • Logistics Coordinator: tracks shipments, coordinates schedules, updates records, and communicates with suppliers or carriers.
  • Warehouse Associate: supports receiving, picking, packing, stock movement, and accurate inventory handling.
  • Warehouse Supervisor: coordinates daily warehouse tasks, staff allocation, safety practices, and inventory processes.
  • Supply Chain Analyst: reviews operational data, identifies patterns, and helps assess service, inventory, or delivery performance.
  • Fleet Coordinator: supports vehicle scheduling, maintenance coordination, driver communication, and fleet records.
  • Delivery Driver: transports goods according to assigned routes, delivery instructions, and applicable driving requirements.

Skills and Systems

Organization, time management, accurate record-keeping, communication, and problem-solving are useful across many logistics roles. Depending on the position, employers may ask for spreadsheet skills, warehouse management systems, inventory control, route planning, ERP platforms, shipment documentation, or experience with transport operations. Driving roles may require a specific valid license and a suitable driving record under local rules.

Understanding the Work Arrangement

Read the vacancy for shift patterns, physical duties, location, travel, vehicle requirements, and whether the work takes place in a warehouse, office, distribution center, or on the road. Some roles involve weekends, rotating shifts, strict delivery windows, or time-sensitive coordination. Clarify whether the employer supplies equipment and how overtime or travel is handled.

Preparing a Logistics CV

Highlight relevant experience in stock control, dispatch, order processing, scheduling, route coordination, documentation, or customer communication. Mention systems and equipment you have actually used. If you have operational experience, provide clear examples of accuracy, safe working practices, timely coordination, or process improvements without exaggerating your responsibility.

Safety and Operational Reliability

Logistics work depends on following procedures, maintaining accurate records, protecting goods, and communicating delays early. Warehouse and transport jobs may include physical or road-safety risks, so check the training, protective equipment, vehicle or machinery requirements, and incident-reporting procedures associated with the position.

Logistics and Transportation Jobs: FAQs

Confirm license requirements, routes, working hours, vehicle and fuel arrangements, compensation, insurance responsibilities, and any delivery targets or equipment provided by the employer.
