ORIGINAL JOB DESCRIPTION
About the Job
Company Description Garnish helps restaurants across the United States build and manage a strong online presence so guests can easily find them and order directly. The company creates restaurant websites and branded mobile apps, supports direct online ordering, and optimizes Google Business Profiles and local SEO to improve local search visibility. Garnish focuses on reflecting each restaurant’s unique brand, simplifying the ordering experience, and enabling a direct ordering model that increases revenue retention. The team provides ongoing support to keep digital channels current and effective, offering tailored solutions that grow with each restaurant’s needs. Role Description The Senior Backend Engineer role at Garnish is a full-time, hybrid environment, based in Cairo, Egypt. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain backend services that power restaurant websites, mobile apps, and direct ordering experiences. You will develop robust APIs, optimize performance, and ensure system reliability and security across Garnish’s platform. Day-to-day responsibilities include implementing new features, refactoring existing code, integrating third-party services, and collaborating closely with front-end engineers, product managers, and designers. You will participate in code reviews, contribute to architectural decisions, improve development tooling and workflows, and help mentor other engineers on backend best practices. WHAT YOU'LL OWN • Integrations with restaurant POS systems (Toast first) and other third parties: ordering middleware, delivery providers, payments and messaging • The order flow end to end: payment → kitchen ticket → courier → customer updates, including what happens when a partner is down • Performance and cost of our backend and Postgres databases: slow queries, background jobs, webhooks, data transfer • Our backend architecture: deciding what should move into a dedicated backend service and new infrastructure, then leading that move without disrupting live restaurants • Code reviews, technical standards, and on-call for the systems you own Qualifications 5+ years building backend systems in production, including 2+ years owning a system end to end (design, deployment, on-call) • Strong TypeScript and Node.js • Deep PostgreSQL: schema design, migrations, indexing, reading query plans • Built and run third-party API integrations in production: OAuth, signed webhooks, idempotency, retries, and reconciliation when the other side is down or wrong • Payments experience (Stripe or similar): charges, refunds, webhooks, and making sure nothing is charged or refunded twice • Background jobs and queues: knowing which work belongs off the request path, and how to make it safe to retry • Has designed a new service or infrastructure and moved live traffic onto it step by step • Observability: logging, alerts and error tracking you'd trust during a Friday dinner rush • Clear written English: you'll write design docs and explain trade-offs to non-backend teammates Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience; prior experience in a senior or lead backend role is highly beneficial. NICE TO HAVE • Restaurant tech: Toast, Square or Clover APIs; Deliverect, Otter or Checkmate; delivery APIs such as DoorDash Drive • Supabase, tRPC, Next.js, Vercel • Multi-tenant SaaS, especially one database per customer • Cloud infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code (AWS or GCP, Terraform) Show more
